Where The Books Are Now
A podcast about Vermont's Public Libraries. In each episode we visit with library staff from one public library in Vermont and learn about its history and some of the awesome resources for the community (Did you know many public libraries lend more than books? You can find snowshoes, telescopes, tables and chairs, fishing poles, portable scanners and laminators, cake pans, games, and more). But we don't forget about books and in every episode we'll give you a few of our book recommendations. These are not your grandma's libraries!
Where The Books Are Now
Episode 14 Warren Public Library Warren VT
In today's episode, I chat with Marie Schmukal, Library Director at the Warren Public Library in Warren, VT. Marie shared some history of the Warren Library that is similar to many public libraries. The library had many different locations when it first began, but its current home is the first floor of the Warren Town Hall.
She also told me about the Mad River Libraries group that offers reciprocal borrowing between towns and collaborates on many events for their communities. Such a great idea, especially for a group of smaller towns and libraries! The Warren Library also has a very cool Maker Space, offers Jigsaw Puzzle Tournaments, a Pub Trivia night - and like all public libraries, so much more.
Marie and I shared some cozy, quirky, and a couple of "must-read" books during this episode. I recommended one of the best historical novels so far this year about the life of Florence Nightingale, and one of my favorite quirky, but perfect novels from one of my favorite authors, Kevin Wilson. Marie shared a cozy mystery featuring an elderly woman who runs a tea shop in San Francisco, a novel that follows the lives of all the inhabitants of one particular house in rural Massachusetts, and her "must-read" - a retelling of the character Jim's story from the classic, Huckleberry Finn.
